Hydrotherapy

Use the water when it creates a better way to move

Hydrotherapy is physiotherapy-led exercise in a pool. Buoyancy, water resistance and warmth can make some movements more manageable and allow useful exercise that is difficult on land.

Hydrotherapy may be useful for

  • Graded strengthening and conditioning
  • Reduced confidence or tolerance with land-based movement
  • Joint pain or loading sensitivity
  • Neurological rehabilitation and movement practice
  • Balance, walking and general mobility goals
  • Re-engaging with exercise in a supported environment

Assessment comes first

Pool therapy is not automatically suitable for every person or every goal. We consider medical stability, skin integrity, continence, transfers, pool access, cognition, supervision needs and the likely benefit compared with land-based treatment.

Part of a wider plan

Hydrotherapy can stand alone for a period or complement home and land-based rehabilitation. We use the pool for what it does well, while keeping progress connected to everyday function outside the water.
